About

Meet Your Trainer

Hi, I`m Rich Parker from Training In Aid. I created "How2Thrive As A Humanitarian Consultant" for people just like you.

Because I`ve been in those shoes you`re wearing.

After years of living from project to project, responding to tender requests and answering my clients’ call to travel (often with a few days notice), I finally figured I should stop trading my time and stress for income.

That`s when my team and I built a methodology that transformed my consulting career.

These days, I get to choose what projects I work on, and when. And unlike my life before, my company gives me a predictable income all year round - even during time off.

And now I want to share this so that other aid and development consultants can fulfill their own career and lifestyle goals.

If you have questions about the course or community, do get in touch. We’d love to help.

Sectoral Relevance

What stands out is how precisely the course fits the humanitarian / development context. Every module is aligned to sector realities, helping consultants uphold their core values while developing the commercial mindset needed for sustainability - especially for those transitioning from salaried roles. The contracting section is excellent: it offers respectful, plain-English scripts, what-to-say examples, and follow-up prompts that make pricing and expectation-setting far less daunting. Finally, the practical guidance on integrating software and optimizing AI usage removes the intimidation factor and provides clear first steps, giving consultants the confidence to explore and adopt these essential tools.

Comprehensive and Accessible

This course fills an important gap in the market. Much of humanitarian professional expertise is provided by independent consultants moving between established organisations with little guidance on how to establish yourself in this field and navigate your way to running a successful practice. This course looks to fill this gap. It has been set up to guide and support both those setting up as consultants but also those with some years under their belt who might like to review and improve their practice. It is comprehensive, accessible, and draws on the real life experiences of a successful and highly regarded consultant.

Practical and Useful

Rich Parker is at the top of his game for exactly the reasons he outlines in his opening module. This course is dedicated to helping others succeed in their humanitarian consultancy journey. It offers practical advice from someone with lived experience, and is crucial for those aiming to transition to or build on their humanitarian expertise in a self-determined way.

Supportive to Individual Needs

Rich’s 11-module course demystifies humanitarian and development consulting with step-by-step videos and practical worksheets. I wanted to finish feeling, "I can do that." I did - recognising it will be a challenge, but one I can embrace more confidently. Knowing Rich and the community will accompany us, as the consultant's journey winds and bumps along, is tremendously reassuring.
